If you're a fan of of Elly Griffith's Ruth Galloway crime novels, prepare to be very excited – and possibly a little disappointed.

Elly Griffiths Norfolk: A Photographic Journey Through Ruth Galloway's Home County

Elly Griffiths Norfolk

While the Ruth Galloway series ended earlier this year, Griffiths is releasing a new nonfiction title, Elly Griffiths Norfolk, which gives us a guided tour of the locations used throughout the series. This full-colour, 224-page book includes photos by Justin Minns and commentary by Griffiths herself.

Much like Ann Cleeves' Shetland and Vera novels, Griffiths' Ruth Galloway books are uniquely shaped by their setting – to the point that they'd be entirely different novels in any other location. In the book, we see the ways the landscape is changed by each of the four seasons. Photos include seascapes and farmlands, wetlands and woodlands, and more than a few lovely churches and cottages. The inside cover also includes a map of how the fictional parts of the book are laid out within the area.

Elly Griffiths Norfolk will be released on November 9th.

That Sounds Delightful – What Could Possibly Be Disappointing?

If you're in the UK, nothing. As it's a lengthy photo book, it's not cheap – but it's more than fair, given the crazy costs of printing in full colour. You can order a copy HERE at Amazon UK.

Unfortunately, due to the challenges of printing and distributing books like this one, there are no firm plans to release it in the US. That means that if you want a copy, you're going to have to pay some pretty hefty shipping fees from a site like Amazon UK (yes, Americans can order from Amazon UK). When we checked using a US address with the guaranteed pre-order price, it came to around $52 USD for the cheapest combination of book + shipping.

Of course, given that this is a must-read for any die-hard Ruth Galloway fans, it may seem like relatively little in comparison to the amount of joy it will bring you – and of course, you can always stick it on your Christmas list and hope Santa is feeling generous.

One Additional Alternative for US Shipping

If you're like us and you frequently order from the UK (especially from merchants that won't ship to the US), you may find it useful to use a re-packing and forwarding service like Reship. The way it works is this:

  1. You sign up at Reship HERE. You can use our referral code, 84A9H0U6, to get an extra $10 off your first shipment. Full disclosure: They haven't paid to be mentioned here, but we also receive $10 in credit if you sign up using our code.
  2. Reship assigns you three addresses: one in the US, one in Canada, and one in the UK.
  3. When you place orders at UK merchants, you give them your UK Reship address instead of your own. That way, you're paying for in-country shipping instead of international shipping. Just be aware that some items may be restricted for international shipment, like flammable perfumes, chemicals, etc. I lost part of a Yorkshire Soap Co. shipment by not remembering this (though a friend in the UK quite enjoyed it when I forwarded it domestically).
  4. When your packages arrive at Reship, they send you a photo to let you know what arrived. When all your packages have arrived, you consolidate them into a single package and Reship gives you quotes for getting everything forwarded to you.

So – if you're buying other items from the UK for Christmas, this might be a way to shave a little off your total shipping costs.
